Panama is often called the “Crossroads of the World,” serving as a vital link between Central and South America.
At the heart of Panama's importance lies the famous Panama Canal, which completely changed global trade.
But beyond its historical significance, Panama is a diverse destination.
There’s city life, stunning beaches, nature adventures, and even some partying - a little something for everybody.
I’ve been to Panama twice (so far) and can honestly say it's a must-visit country in Central America.
In this article, I’ll guide you on how you can make the most of 6 days in Panama.
Here’s a glimpse at the Panama Itinerary:

Tocumen International Airport (PTY)
Touching down at Tocumen International Airport (PTY) in Panama City marks the beginning of your 6 days in Panama.
I flew with Avianca for the first leg of my trip for $146 USD from JFK to Panama City.
Alternatively, Copa Airlines offers an impressive stopover program, allowing you to spend up to seven days in Panama City at no extra charge when flying to another destination.
Essentially, you can enjoy two trips for the price of one when it comes to flights.

Panama Entry Requirements
Customs forms will be handed out for you to complete while you're still on the plane.
It's best to have a pen on hand to fill out the form promptly, so you're prepared before you even get off the plane.
Once you arrive in Panama City, you'll proceed through customs, where you'll encounter standard questions such as your accommodation details, duration of stay, and profession.
Once your passport is stamped, your Panama vacation is in full effect!
Make sure your passport is valid for the entirety of your stay, with at least six months before it expires.
Additionally, be prepared to provide proof of exit.
If you've booked a one-way flight, they will request confirmation of your return flight before boarding the plane to Panama at the airport.
It's essential to have all the necessary documentation to avoid any complications.
Americans can enter Panama visa-free for up to 180 days.

Exchanging Money
There's no need to exchange currency if you have USD.
Panamanian Balboas have a conversion rate of 1:1 with the USD, and balboas are available only as coins.
USD is widely accepted as the official currency in Panama.
If you need to withdraw cash, make sure you’re using a debit card that doesn’t charge you foreign transaction fees like the Charles Schwab that reimburses all ATM fees.

How to Get Around Panama
Rent a Car
You can rent a car from companies like Sixt Car Rentals.
However, if you're staying within Panama City, using Uber may be a better option - price-wise and safety-wise.
Keep in mind that driving in Panama City can be aggressive, so only drive if you're comfortable with it.
Overall, renting a car wouldn't be my top suggestion for navigating the city.
Uber
Uber in Panama City can be a convenient and relatively affordable option for getting around.
For instance, our trip from the airport to our Airbnb, which was about 20 minutes away, cost us $17 USD, making it the most expensive Uber ride of our entire trip.
On average, our Uber rides were about 10 minutes long and cost around $4 USD each way.
It's important to note that while Uber can be budget-friendly, taxis in Panama City are typically much pricier, sometimes costing up to three times as much as an Uber ride.
Also, Uber rides in Panama City are generally considered safe.
Before the ride begins, you can verify the license plate and the driver's name.
Additionally, the driver must enter a pin provided in your Uber app to confirm the ride, adding an extra layer of security which I found to be quite nice.
Public Transportation
If you’re really looking to See the World, Save a Dollar, consider public transportation.
This is by far the cheapest way to get around Panama City.
You can grab a rechargeable metro card at the airport for $5 USD.
Make sure the one you select grants access to both trains and buses, as some may only work for one mode of transportation.
A plus - the same card can be used for up to four people.
Train fares are incredibly affordable at only $0.35, while bus fares range from $0.25 to $1.25 USD.
Public transportation prices are unbeatable.
Just keep in mind that cash is not accepted on the buses, and you’ll need a metro card to pay.

Check into Your Accommodation
Now, let's make our way to your accommodation in Panama City.
During my most recent girls' trip, we stayed in a spacious 3-bedroom, 2-bathroom Airbnb in Panama City with beautiful city views.
The total cost for 5 nights amounted to $641.20 USD.
Remember, group travel can significantly reduce expenses when you split costs among friends.
Before finalizing your accommodation choice, consider the pros and cons of Airbnb and whether a hotel would be a better fit for your trip.

After checking in, our first stop was the grocery store to pick up some essentials: breakfast foods, snacks, and water.
While tap water is potable in Panama, going for bottled water is always a safe choice.
Consider bringing along a LifeStraw water bottle with a filtered straw for added peace of mind.
Once you're back at your accommodation, take some time to refresh.
Whether it's unpacking, taking a nap, or simply freshening up with a shower, make sure you're ready to enjoy the rest of your day, including dinner later.

Dinner at Furia
Dinner at Furia was like stepping into a VIP experience from the moment we arrived.
With a doorman to open the door and a dimly lit staircase leading up, the ambiance was already set.
As we entered, the host asked if we had a reservation (“Tiene reserva?”), emphasizing the importance of booking in advance for this popular spot.
Our waitress was bilingual, speaking both Spanish and English, and she provided us with the best recommendations.
I ended up ordering the veggie roll, an incredible combination of mushrooms, avocado, and a delicious crunch that left me truly impressed.
For drinks, I went for a mule topped with gummy bears, which added a playful touch to the experience.
Furia went above and beyond to celebrate my best friend's birthday, surprising us with a lit-up birthday sign, sparklers, and a decadent baked Alaska surrounded by gold-dusted fruit.
They even provided champagne for a toast to her special day.
Our dinner reservations were for 9 pm, which seemed to be the ideal time to dine at Furia if you want to experience dinner and some nightlife.
As the night progressed, the restaurant seamlessly transitioned into a nightclub atmosphere.
By 10:30 pm, the lights grew dimmer, the music from the live DJ grew louder, and the energy intensified as tables and chairs were cleared to make way for dancing.
With flashing lights and pulsating bass, it was an unforgettable experience.

Day 2: Breakfast, Taboga Island, Tacos La Neta
Breakfast at Michael’s
Brunch at Michael's is a cute spot in Panama City, perfect for anyone who's trying to do it for the 'gram.
Opening at 7 am every day (except Mondays when they're closed), this restaurant offers plenty of photo opportunities with its fun and playful aesthetics.
They offer so many creative menu options that it may be hard to choose. So take a look at the menu ahead of time!
During my visit, I tried the vegan taco brunch priced at $13 USD.
It was a build-your-own dish, and it exceeded my expectations with so many great flavors.
However, if you're not a vegetarian, I'd highly recommend that you try the mystery dish.
I won't spoil the surprise, but trust me, it's worth it.
You can also order bottomless mimosas for $21 USD.
But fair warning, they’re pretty strong!

Taboga Island
To add some beach vibes to your Panama itinerary, consider a visit to Taboga Island.
During my recent trip to celebrate my best friend's birthday, we went on a catamaran excursion, which cost around $100 USD per person for a 6-hour trip.
The package included fresh fruits, an open bar, and lunch on the boat.
Onboard, there was music, dancing, and plenty of space to relax either on the nets or under the covered seating area.
It's a great option for those who prefer guided tours.

For a more budget-friendly option, you can take the Taboga Express Fast Ferry from Amador to Taboga.
The roundtrip fare is $24 USD per person, and while there aren't any onboard amenities like food or drinks, the ferry ride takes just 30 minutes to reach the island.
This way, you can enjoy the island at your own pace without being tied to a tour schedule.
Enjoy lunch at one of the local open-air restaurants on the island and don't hesitate to sample some Panamanian cuisine.
Don't miss out on a piña colada served in a fresh pineapple at Kiosco Aboga on La Restinga Beach.
For just $7 USD, you'll get two free refills, and they'll even deliver it to you for free right on the beach.
If you're feeling adventurous, you can rent a bike from Taboga Bike Rental for $5 USD per hour or $25 USD for the whole day.
However, it's best to save the biking for when you're sober.
Take advantage of the souvenir shops scattered across the island and support the locals before you leave.
You can also simply unwind and soak up the sun at one of the beaches until it's time to head back.
There are bathrooms and showers available for a fee.
The prices vary depending on which one you stop at.
After a half day of sun, sand, and waves, cruise back to the mainland to relax and refresh at your accommodation.

Dinner at Tacos La Neta
Dinner at Tacos La Neta offers delicious food and cocktails at reasonable prices.
You can enjoy tacos for about $4 USD each or go for the 3 for $10 USD taco special.
They also offer vegan tacos and burritos.
Their cocktails are priced at $9 USD, but keep an eye out for the $5 USD drink specials.
Tacos La Neta has two locations:
- Opens at noon every day.
- Closes at 2 am on Fridays and Saturdays.
- Closes at 1 am on Thursdays.
- Closes around midnight on all other days.
- Opens at noon every day.
- Closes at 9 pm on Sundays.
- Closes at midnight on Thursdays to Saturdays.
- Closes at 11 pm from Monday to Wednesday.
In the evenings, the atmosphere transforms into a lively party, so come for the food and stay for the fun!

Day 3: Exploring Casco Viejo Day & Night
Breakfast at Tiempos @ American Trade Hotel
Begin your morning at Tiempos, a charming specialty coffee shop located in the heart of Casco Viejo.
Enjoy their diverse selection of coffee blends. I enjoyed a delicious latte for just $4 USD, which can be ordered hot or cold.
They also have Geisha coffee which is some of the most expensive coffee in the world, if you're interested in a splurge.
Pair your coffee with one of their breakfast options, including avocado toast, pancakes, or eggs benedict, priced between $7 and $12 USD.

Free Walking Tour around Casco Antiguo
Explore Casco Antiguo on your own or join a guided walking tour led by knowledgeable locals if you want a more social experience.

Nomada Eatery in Casco Viejo is a great spot to grab lunch after you've done a bit of sightseeing.
They're open daily from 8 am to midnight.
Try out their burgers, paninis, pizzas, soups, or salads priced between $7 and $15 USD per plate.

Make sure to experience the rooftop scene in Casco Viejo by visiting at least one of the top options available.

During my visit, I dined at LazoTea, where I enjoyed the ambiance and refreshing mocktails.
I particularly recommend trying the Rose Berry drink, a delicious blend of lychee, pineapple, mango, and raspberry.
For dinner, I ordered the mushroom pasta, and the total bill for my meal and drinks came to around $30 USD.

Casco Viejo Bar Crawl
If you're feeling like the night is still young, you're absolutely right.
Book one of the bar crawls that go through Casco Viejo at night.
I did this in celebration of my best friend's birthday and it was a lot of fun going to about 4 or 5 different bars all around the town.
The DJs kept the energy high with a mix of hip hop, dancehall, and afrobeats.
Each stop came with a drink or a shot.
Chupitos 507 had the most impressive shots because the bartender lined them all up and lit them in a blazing fire.
Also, everything looked glow in the dark when you went inside.
Even if you don't book a bar crawl, at least stop by Chupitos 507 one night.

Day 4: Mahalo, Panama Canal, Ancon Hill, Fonda Lo Que Hay
Breakfast at Mahalo Cocina y Jardin
Mahalo open at 8 am for brunch on Saturdays and Sundays.
If your Day 4 falls on a different day, simply adjust your plans accordingly.
They offer vegan and vegetarian options, so there's something for everyone.
You can enjoy a delicious breakfast for approximately $9 to $14 USD.
Panama Canal
The Panama Canal is undoubtedly one of the most well-known attractions in Panama.
It was designed to significantly reduce travel time for ships between the Pacific Ocean and the Caribbean Sea and facilitate shipments from every part of the world.
Shipments used to take 3 weeks but now using an advanced lock system, it only takes 8 to 10 hours across Gatun Lake.
During my first visit with my husband, we watched the ships passing through the canal, even though they go at a pretty slow pace.
For the best viewing experience, I recommend visiting between 9 am - 11 am and 3 pm - 5 pm, when ships are most likely to pass through the canal.
On my most recent visit to the Panama Canal, I decided to also check out the iMax movie which I would recommend doing to get a full picture of the remarkable engineering behind its creation and maintenance.
I highly recommend this experience to gain a deeper appreciation for this iconic landmark.
The entrance to the Panama Canal is $10 USD, and the IMAX movie is a separate ticket for $7.22 USD.

Lunch at Los Tacos de Villa
For a taste of authentic Mexican cuisine, head to Los Tacos de Villa, open daily from 11 am to 10 pm.
They offer a variety of taco options, including vegetarian choices, along with delicious margaritas to complement your meal.
You can plan to budget around $20 USD per person here.
Ancon Hill
This is for all my nature lovers (If that’s not you, keep scrolling because you’re free to rest until dinner).
You can add Ancon Hill to your Panama itinerary if you’re looking for some easy hiking in Panama City, Panama.
I came here with my husband and it offered a serene escape in the lush greenery just outside the city.
While there’s a slight incline, it’s more of a leisurely nature walk than a full-blown hike.
The trail is well-paved, and you’re rewarded with gorgeous views of Panama City after only about 15 minutes of walking.
You might even see a sloth or two. Plus, it’s free.
Don't forget to stay hydrated in the humid climate of Panama City—consider bringing along a hydration pack to keep you refreshed throughout your exploration.

Dinner at Fonda Lo Que Hay
If you’re looking for one of the best restaurants in Panama City, head to Fonda Lo Que Hay.
It’s my favorite restaurant I’ve been to in Panama.
They are very popular so if you can, make a reservation.
However, note that they don't accept reservations after 7 pm on weekdays and afternoon on weekends, operating on a first-come, first-served basis.
Plan to come any day besides Monday when they are closed.
My go-to order is the Caribbean style prawns for $14 USD.
Additionally, they also offer a variety of mocktail, cocktail, wine, and beer options with prices ranging from $3 to $12 USD.
After the best meal of your life at Fonda Lo Que Hay, be sure to get some rest for an early start tomorrow.
Day 5: San Blas Day Tour, El Trapiche
San Blas Islands
This is one of those bucket list day trips from Panama City and one of the most beautiful places in Panama to add to your itinerary.
For my 25th birthday, I got to experience the pristine beauty of the Caribbean side of the country by exploring some of the 378 stunning islands that make up San Blas with its crystal-clear waters.
One of the highlights of this trip was the opportunity to engage with the indigenous Guna Yala people.
