One of the highlights of our visit to Tirta Gangga was walking along the footsteps that appear to float in the water. And seeing the huge koi fish swim at our feet as we fed them in the Mahabharata Pond.

Tirta Gangga is about two hours away from Ubud.
It is in the Eastern region of Bali located in the village of Ababi, Karangasem Regency.
As you wander through the complex, you’ll see intricate stone carvings, lotus-filled ponds, and intricate water features that create a serene and captivating atmosphere (as long as you come before the crowds).

How to Get to Tirta Gangga
The easiest way to get to Tirta Gangga Water Palace is with a private driver. This is the most stress-free way.
Our private driver, Agus, was a God-send. He has extremely fair prices, and drove us all over Bali.
He was much more than just a driver. He gave us all the local insight as we spent 8 days in Bali.
Not only did he give us the inside scoop, but he also took our pictures and videos for us.

You can also get to Tirta Gangga by scooter.
You need to use extreme caution when doing this because it can be risky.
Scooters may seemingly be the fastest mode to getting around, but that is only if you are up for a challenge.
You will be driving on the left side of the road, in lots of traffic, with huge trucks, dogs in the road, blind corners, and signs written in Balinese only.
Be sure to wear a helmet, and have travel insurance.
Some travel insurance companies require you to have specific motorbike or scooter license.
Be sure to check those details, as well, before making your decision on how you’ll be getting around Bali.

Best Time to Visit Tirta Gangga
Tirta Gangga Water Palace is open from 6 am to 7 pm.
This allows ample time to explore this opulent water garden. But it is best enjoyed when there are fewer people.
Plan your visit to Tirta Gangga during the early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and experience it in a more peaceful ambiance.
The earlier you arrive, the better.

Tirta Gangga Entrance Fee
The entrance fee for Tirta Gangga Water Palace cost us around $3 USD per person.
We paid an additional $0.50 for fish food.
If you want the fish to come near you, you absolutely should buy the fish food!
You can also swim in sacred spring waters of the lower swimming pool for ~$1 USD per person.
Overall, Tirta Gangga is an affordable attraction for all travelers.

The name “Tirta Gangga” itself translates to “Water from the Ganges” in Balinese.

Tirta Gangga was constructed as a sacred place for the king and his royal family to relax and meditate.
The complex served as a royal retreat for the Karangasem royal family and their guests.
Tirta Gangga was also a venue for religious ceremonies and cultural performances.
During the eruption of Mount Agung in 1963, Tirta Gangga Water Palace suffered extensive damage.
However, it was meticulously restored to its former glory.
Today, Tirta Gangga stands as a testament to the resilience and artistic brilliance of the Balinese people.
What to Expect at Tirta Gangga Water Palace
Tirta Gangga’s courtyards are thoughtfully arranged across three different levels.
This symbolizes the triloka concept in Hinduism: the earthly realm, the divine realm, and the realm of demons.
Within each level, you’ll encounter incredible water features and intricately crafted sculptures, inviting visitors to wander and appreciate their artistry.
Nawa Sanga Fountain
The Nawa Sanga fountain, designed in the shape of a lotus, has 11 tiers.
There are eight deity figures that surround the fountain.
They symbolize the protectors of the cardinal directions.
The fountain itself embodies the representation of the central Shiva deity.
The Meditation Garden
In the northwest part of Tirta Gangga, you’ll find an interesting meditation garden.
It is adorned with eight figures that portray samsara, which is the eternal cycle of life, death, and rebirth in Hinduism.
This space invites meditation and reflection on the profound nature of existence.
The Mahabharata Pond
When you think of Tirta Gangga, you’re most likely picturing the Mahabharata Pond.
This features the stepping stones that you can gracefully walk across and feed the abundant koi fish.
However, it’s worth nothing that this area draws a significant crowd due to its popularity.
The South Pond
Within Tirta Gangga, the South Pond stands as the most expansive water feature.
At the heart of this pond, beneath an intricately designed bridge, rests "demon island."
Swimming Pools
There are upper and lower swimming pools.
These crystal-clear pools were once used exclusively by the royal family for ritual bathing.
You can take a refreshing dip in the cool waters or simply admire the intricate architecture and statues surrounding the pools.
You can swim in these designated pools, but definitely don’t try to swim in any of the other water features at Tirta Gangga!
Cultural Significance of Tirta Gangga
Tirta Gangga Water Palace holds deep cultural significance for the Balinese people.
This water palace is regarded as sacred, with healing waters.
It is believed that by swimming in the waters during a full moon, you will be blessed with eternal youth and good health.
Balinese Hindus often visit Tirta Gangga to partake in melukat, a traditional ritual bath in the holy waters.
Witnessing such rituals during your visit can give you a unique insight into the profound spirituality and devotion of the Balinese people.
We participated in a melukat ritual at Teman Beji Griya waterfall in Bali, where it was a more private experience.

Just a short distance away, about 10 kilometers from Tirta Gangga, lies the ancient village of Tenganan.

A visit to the traditional village of Tenganan offers a glimpse into the authentic Balinese way of life.
Gate of Heaven Lempuyang Temple
Going in the opposite direction of Tenganan Village, you will find the Gate of Heaven about 10 kilometers from Tirta Gangga.
It is located on the slope of Mount Lempuyang and offers incredible views of Mount Agung every time the clouds separate.
Mount Agung
For nature enthusiasts, a trek to Mount Agung, Bali’s highest volcano, is an adventure worth considering.
Particularly if you are up for a challenging hike.
Mount Agung is about 25 kilometers away from Tirta Gangga, and takes about five hours to hike.
The challenging ascent rewards hikers with breathtaking panoramic views and a sense of achievement.
You could hike Mount Agung at sunrise before heading to Tirta Gangga.
Sidemen Rice Terraces
Additionally, the Sidemen rice terraces offer a serene escape into Bali’s rural landscapes.
It is about 27 kilometers away from Tirta Gangga.
You can witness traditional agricultural practices that have shaped the island’s culture for centuries at these rice paddies.

Dress Code
As Tirta Gangga is a religious and cultural site, it is advisable to dress respectfully.
Avoid wearing revealing clothing and opt for modest attire out of respect for the local customs.

I’m a comfort girl. You can’t be cute with your feet hurting.
You’ll be walking on various surfaces, including stone pathways and stepping stones, so it’s essential that you pack comfortable shoes.

Sun Protection
Bali’s tropical climate can be quite sunny, so don’t forget to bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun’s rays.

Tirta Gangga offers numerous picture-perfect spots.
Capture your memories, but remember to be mindful and respectful of other visitors and the cultural significance of the site.
The best camera is the one you know how to use, even if that means your iPhone. But this is the camera that we use on vacation.
Arrive Early
Get to Tirta Gangga as early as you can to avoid crowds.
This may have been considered a hidden gem in the past, but there’s nothing hidden about this place.
If you don’t want a million other people in your pictures, and you don’t want to worry about squeezing by a group of people who are also trying to walk along the same overwater footsteps in the opposite direction as you - get here early!
If that sounds oddly specific, it’s because we did not get to Tirta Gangga early and had to maneuver the crowds, which honestly lessened our experience.
