Let’s take it back to 2018 - the year my husband and I, still in our dating days, went on our first international trip together to the Dominican Republic.
Hiking El Limon became one of our first big adventures, laying the foundation for many more in the years that followed.
Now, celebrating a decade together, the allure of El Limon Waterfall drew us back.
This time, we embraced a different, more laid-back approach to reaching the waterfall.

If you look at the map of the Dominican Republic, you’ll find the capital, Santo Domingo, in the south, the popular resort town of Punta Cana in the east, and, to the north, secluded beaches surrounded by lush rainforests in Las Terrenas, Samana.
To start your adventure to El Limon Waterfall, head to the small town of El Limon in Samana, which is just a half-hour drive from Las Terrenas.
I personally stayed in Las Terrenas both times I visited the Dominican Republic.
This beach town on the Samana Peninsula serves as an ideal home base for exploring El Limon and getting to El Limon Waterfall (Cascada el Limon).
The waterfall stands tall at 52 meters and is a popular site for tourists and locals, alike.

How to Get to El Salto del Limon
If you’re coming from Las Terrenas, consider it an excellent starting point for your journey to El Limon.
Not coming from Las Terrenas? > Here’s how you can visit El Limon from Punta Cana.
On our initial visit, we embraced the local experience by taking the guagua (essentially a pick-up truck or public transport van that can seat 10 to 20 people) from Las Terrenas to El Limon and then hiking to the falls.
The second time around, we opted for a more organized approach, still starting in Las Terrenas and booking a tour that provided transportation from our resort to a horse trail.
From there, we enjoyed a scenic horseback ride leading us to the star of the show - El Limon Waterfall.
There are various routes to choose from, offering flexibility to suit your preferences.

Hiking to El Limon Waterfall Dominican Republic
If you’re up for the adventure of hiking to El Limon waterfall, no guide is necessary, making it a more budget-friendly way to experience the falls.
This option offers the ultimate scenic route where everything unfolds at your own pace.
However, to make the most of this journey, you'll need to familiarize yourself with the essential steps to take.

Guagua: Las Terrenas to El Limon Waterfall
First things first, you’ll need to hop on a guagua from Las Terrenas.
To catch a guagua, the fare is 50 RD, which is less than $1 USD per person one way. We woke up early, around 6 am, to ask the locals when to expect one.
Guaguas start running at 7:15 am and come approximately every 15 minutes until 6:30 pm.
In Las Terrenas, we located a bus stop on Duarte Street in front of the cemetery.
Simply wave one down, and pay in local currency when they pick you up.
During our ride, we shared the guagua with several other tourists, creating an interesting experience.
People spoke various languages - English, Spanish, and others - yet we all managed to communicate somehow.
We exchanged stories and learned a lot about people from around the world during this 35-minute ride to Las Terrenas, creating a cool cultural exchange.
Opening up to meeting people while traveling can result in a great experience, as we discovered during this journey to El Limon from Las Terrenas.
When you’re ready to leave El Limon, you can catch a guagua across from El Limon River back to Las Terrenas every 15 minutes between 6:30 am and 6 pm.

Salto El Limon Hike
After arriving by guagua from Las Terrenas, the journey to El Limon Waterfall begins with a brief ten-minute walk to the hike entrance from the bus stop.
To access Salto el Limon, there’s an entrance fee of 50 RD, approximately $0.90 USD per person.
It’s essential to be aware and avoid scams; neither guides nor horses are required.
You can easily take on the adventure on your own for less than a dollar.
The hiking experience kicks off at the entrance, and the trail predominantly inclines.
Exercise caution, especially when crossing the river early in the hike.
I highly recommend wearing water shoes with good grip; crossing the rivers with bare feet is an option, but sharp stones at the bottom of the river can detract from the experience.
Back in 2018, I underestimated the importance of water shoes (as I struggled in the picture above).
Needless to say, I haven't gone anywhere without water shoes since that very day.
Although the surroundings are very lush and green, with gorgeous views surrounding your every move, it’s not all glamorous.
Expect to trek through mud and horse poop along the way.
At the top of the hill, a restaurant awaits with a scenic view overlooking El Limon waterfall.
A 10-minute descent from the hilltop leads to a smaller waterfall, providing a refreshing break after the hike.
Following this point, a slight uphill walk awaits to complete the journey to the majestic 52-meter-high El Limon Waterfall.
Overall, this took us an hour and a half to hike to the falls from the entrance, going at our own pace.

In our experience, we booked our tour through the resort we were staying with, Viva V Samana by Wyndham, to ensure we were going through a reputable operator that prioritizes a more humane and enjoyable experience for both the riders and the horses.

Horse Riding Tour Experience
During our horse riding tour, helmets were a must, and our guides walked beside our horses, assisting them along the way.
The trail spanned about 40 minutes, with some parts proving a bit steep, and our guides took the time to point out local plans along the route.
Once we reached a stairway area, the horses were parked, marking the transition to the next part of our adventure.
We approached the amazing El Limon Waterfall as we descended about 250 stairs.
While descending, take your time and hold onto the rail for support.
Once you reach the falls, a local is usually present, ready to capture your memories with your camera.
They offer colorful props like parrots and flower crowns for a unique photoshoot experience.
We tipped each photographer about $5 USD, but you can contribute what feels right to you.
Our photoshoot included couple shots, solo poses, various angles, and different spots around the waterfall - we had a lot of fun with it.
We even recreated photos that we took the first time we visited El Limon together.
After the photoshoot, we ventured into the cool waters. The falls provide plenty of shade, so don’t expect warm water.
Be cautious as the rocks around the waterfall are extremely slippery!
Wearing water shoes with good grip is a must.
We spent about an hour in the swimming hole beneath the waterfall, where rocks offer seating and you can swim towards the cascade.
Arriving early is advisable, as by mid-day, large groups tend to arrive, potentially crowding the swimming hole.
Before heading back to where your horse is parked, there’s a gift shop at the top of the stairs where you can purchase souvenirs.
Coming back on horseback takes the same path, which is why doing this half-day tour in the morning is great.
It leaves you with the rest of the day to relax in the Dominican Republic.
If you’d like, you can give a tip to the guide who walked your horse before you go, but remember, it’s completely up to you.
Don’t feel pressured.
