This strategic approach is all about streamlining your packing for the ultimate benefit.
But don’t worry, minimalist packing doesn’t mean leaving everything at home; it means zeroing in on the absolute must-haves.
Packing like a minimalist comes down to condensing four primary packing categories: Clothes, Toiletries, Accessories, and Electronics.
In this article, I’ll guide you through the art of efficiently packing smarter and lighter, all with a minimalist mindset.
It’ll be a real weight lifted off your shoulders.
Drawing from our experiences traveling to over 40 countries, my husband and I proudly belong to “Team Carry-On.”
We’ve never checked a bag.
For us, minimalist packing has become more than a strategy; it’s a lifestyle choice for travel that’s worry-free and truly enjoyable.
Now, you might assume it’s easier for us to pack light on those shorter 4-5 day trips.
But let me tell you, I’ve taken packing light to an extreme level.
Case in point: My 3-week Southeast Asian honeymoon was packed into a single backpack. And I didn’t miss a thing.
For me, it’s all about traveling with intention.
Whether you have a million stamps in your passport or you’re planning your very first trip, this guide on how to pack like a minimalist is your key to transforming the way you pack for your next adventure.
Forget lugging around heavy suitcases filled with items you might never use.
Instead, we’ll focus on picking versatile clothes, essential toiletries and electronics, and multipurpose accessories that suit your needs as a minimalist traveler.
Keep reading to get 27 practical tips on mastering the art of minimalist packing and discover whether packing lighter is the right travel solution for you.
1. Create a Personalized Must-Haves Packing Checklist
Start by using your itinerary as a guide.
Take a close look at your travel plans and identify the activities, events, and destinations you’ll visit.
This will help you determine the specific essentials you need to pack for each leg of your journey.
For instance, if you’re planning to explore picturesque landscapes, you might want to include comfortable walking shoes or a specific outfit that will allow you to look and feel your best and pop in photos.
The beauty of this approach is that it encourages thoughtful consideration of what truly matters to you.
Instead of succumbing to the temptation of packing everything “just in case,” you become intentional and selective.
Each item on your checklist serves a purpose and aligns with your desired experiences and aesthetic preferences.
2. Pack Versatile Outfits
Packing versatile outfits is a fundamental strategy that helps you pack like a minimalist and maximize the functionality of your wardrobe.
Select clothes that can be mixed and matched in various combinations, allowing you to create multiple looks with a limited number of pieces.
Packing like a minimalist is not about depriving yourself, but rather about embracing the concept of quality over quantity.
Focusing on a well-curated selection of versatile and stylish pieces will ensure you’ll be ready for different climates, any occasion, and spontaneous adventures while keeping your overall luggage size minimal.
3. Layer Clothes
By choosing clothing that can be easily layered, accessorized, and adapted to different settings and weather conditions, you significantly reduce the number of items you need to pack while maximizing their potential.
Layering provides several benefits that make it an essential technique for travelers seeking simplicity and efficiency.
For example, you can pack a few basic T-shirts, shorts, dresses, or jackets to create different levels of insulation depending on the weather.
One of my favorite items to layer with is the TropicFeel NS40 travel jacket. It’s a light jacket and has a thermoregulated vest. Best of all, it’s waterproof.
Lightweight layers take up less room than bulky sweaters or coats, allowing you to pack more efficiently and leave space for other travel essentials.
4. Wear Your Bulkiest Clothing
By opting to wear your heaviest or bulkiest items on your journey, you can free up valuable space in your luggage and minimize the overall weight you need to carry in your bag.
You instantly save space in your luggage by wearing heavier items, such as a thick sweater, a bulky coat, or sturdy hiking boots.
Also, wearing your bulkiest clothing in layers provides practicality and comfort.
Airports, planes, and other means of transportation can sometimes be chilly. So having your warmest layers on hand ensures you stay cozy throughout your journey.
5. Select Light, Quick-Drying Fabrics
Selecting light and quick-drying fabrics is a smart choice when aiming to pack like a minimalist.
We’re talking cotton and linen materials.
Light fabrics are generally thinner and more compressible than heavier materials. They take up less space and can be easily packed.
Fabrics with quick-drying properties like moisture-wicking blends, are a game-changer when it comes to staying fresh and comfortable on the road.

6. Wear Neutral Colors
By packing clothes in neutral shades, you can create a multitude of outfit combinations with just a few key pieces.
Neutral colors like white, beige, black, and grey are incredibly versatile and can be easily combined with each other or with pops of color.
Whether you’re attending a casual outing, exploring historical sites, or dining at a fancy restaurant, neutral-toned clothing can easily transition from one setting to another.
This versatility enables you to pack fewer items without compromising on style or appropriateness for different activities.
7. Plan to Do Laundry
This tip is particularly relevant for those who go on longer trips or travel to destinations with warm climates or high humidity.
When you plan to do laundry, you can pack fewer clothing items since you can plan to wash and reuse them during your trip.
When planning your trip, consider booking accommodations that offer laundry facilities or are located nearby laundry services.
This is a proactive step towards making your laundry plans hassle-free.

8. Bring Multi-Purpose Footwear
By packing strategically and considering the weight and versatility of your footwear, you can optimize your packing space and minimize the number of shoes you need to bring.
When aiming to pack like a minimalist, it’s crucial to make the most of your limited luggage space.
You can avoid packing multiple pairs of shoes for different purposes by instead, focusing on bringing one or two pairs of shoes for different purposes.
Pack your lightest pair of shoes (eg. flip flops or sandals), and wear your heavier pair during your travels (eg. sneakers or boots).
This way you will save space. And you’re not adding unnecessary weight to your luggage while still having access to the heavier footwear you may need for specific activities.
This strategy allows you to strike a balance between packing efficiency and having appropriate footwear for different situations.

9. Limit Your Accessories
One way to limit your accessories and pack like a minimalist is to focus on bringing a statement piece and an everyday piece.
And rather than packing all your accessories, consider supporting local artisans and businesses at your destination.
Explore local markets, boutiques, or craft fairs to discover unique and authentic jewelry or accessories.
Not only does this support the local economy, but it also allows you to bring home meaningful and distinctive pieces that will forever remind you of your travel experiences.
One of my favorite pieces of jewelry is my black Tahitian pearl ring that I got from a local shop in Tahiti.
Buying from local markets adds an extra layer of cultural immersion and helps you create connections with the places you visit.
10. Bring Sample Size Toiletries
By opting for smaller versions of your essential personal care products, you can save space in your bags and avoid carrying bulky items.
Sample-size toiletries are designed to be compact and lightweight, making them ideal for your packing like a minimalist goal.
When traveling by air, there are often restrictions on the volume of liquids and gels allowed in carry-on luggage.
By opting for sample-size toiletries, you can ensure compliance with these regulations.
The true challenge for me is packing hair products.
If I don’t get my hair braided or twisted before my trip, I need a good amount of hair products to maintain moisture and style for my naturally curly hair.
This is where the Ries travel bottles come in.
I usually fill two of the 3.4 oz Ries bottles with my curl cream and curl gels and am good to go on my travels for about five days.
The Cadence Capsule Containers are great, as well.
But, I reserve those for transporting smaller amounts of products like edge control gel, toothpaste, concealer, etc.
I have “The Originals” set which are 0.56 oz each, but they’ve recently come out with larger travel sizes – room for more hair products while still packing light!
When packing like a minimalist, it’s important to prioritize the essentials.
By opting for travel-sized containers, you can optimize your packing space, comply with travel regulations, and even reduce waste.

11. Use Solid Toiletries
Solid toiletries such as shampoo bars, toothpaste tablets, and face wash bars are often more concentrated than their liquid counterparts, which means they last longer.
Solid toiletries often come with minimal or recyclable packaging, making them a more environmentally friendly choice.
By opting for solid options, you can reduce plastic waste generated by disposable liquid containers.
This aligns with the minimalist philosophy of minimizing your environmental impact and practicing sustainable travel habits.
Solid toiletries are also easy to use and mess-free.
You don’t have to worry about potential leakages or spills that could ruin your clothes or other belongings.
I love these shampoo and conditioner bars that are easy to pack on my travels > HiBar Shampoo & Conditioner
12. Leave Full-Sized Perfume at Home
Full-sized perfume bottles can take up a significant amount of space in your luggage.
By switching to a mini-refillable perfume bottle, you can free up valuable space.
Also, it’s highly unlikely that you’ll need the full contents of a full-sized perfume bottle on your trip.
Opting for a travel-sized refillable option simply makes more sense.
Mini-refillable perfume bottles offer the advantage of the versatility and the ability to switch fragrances without carrying multiple full-sized bottles.
It’s a minimalist-friendly choice that allows you to carry your favorite scent with you while prioritizing efficiency and simplicity in your travel preparations.
13. Pack Essential Electronics
You should only bring electronics that serve a practical purpose during your trip.
If you don’t work remotely or have specific needs that require a laptop, leaving it behind can significantly reduce the weight and bulk of your luggage.
Instead, rely on the devices you regularly use in your everyday life, such as your smartphone, which can serve multiple purposes.
If you haven’t used your GoPro or Canon in years, you better leave it at home! Use what you have been using.
Trust me, your iPhone camera will do just fine.
You can capture quality photos without the need for extra equipment, allowing you to pack lighter and simpler.
Remember, the goal of minimalist packing is to prioritize functionality, simplicity, and lightness.
Embrace the devices you regularly use, and leave behind those that are redundant or seldom used.
14. Go Digital
Whether it’s storing important documents on your phone or enjoying a library of books on your e-reader, these digital alternatives align perfectly with the minimalist mindset.
It allows you to pack smarter, lighter, and with greater ease.
Also, using digital alternatives reduces paper waste, contributing to a more sustainable and environmentally friendly travel experience.
15. Switch From a Hard Drive to an SSD
SSDs are smaller and lighter than traditional hard drives.
This means you can enjoy the benefits of ample storage without sacrificing precious luggage space.
SSDs are known for their durability and reliability.
Unlike traditional hard drives that rely on spinning disks, SSDs have no moving parts.
This makes them more resistant to shocks, vibrations, and physical impact during travel.
My husband accidentally dropped his hard drive about one foot above the floor and it broke.
He had four years of trips backed up onto that file that we can’t get back. It was in this moment, that he knew we needed to do better and get an SSD.
By using an SSD, you can have peace of mind knowing that your valuable data is better protected against accidental damage.
You’ll also have ample space for your photos and videos and fast access to your data.

16. Roll Your Clothes
Achieve a more compact and efficient packing arrangement by rolling your clothes.
When I roll my clothes, all my must-haves just fit easily into my bag.
It’s like my favorite magic trick.
Plus, my clothes come out less wrinkled than if I folded them.
17. Utilize Packing Cubes
As a Virgo, I embrace my love for organization by using packing cubes as the ultimate organized way to pack my belongings.
It seamlessly complements the practice of rolling your clothes, too.
After you’ve optimized the space in your bag by rolling your clothes, organizing them into packing cubes makes everything convenient to find.
By using different cubes for various categories like swimsuits, tops, or bottoms, you can neatly separate your items.
This ensures everything has its designated place, making it easier to locate specific items when needed.
These packing cubes are a life-saver when it comes to packing light!
18. Compression Cubes
Compression packing cubes take it even a step further. They remove excess air and compress your clothes.
By zipping the cubes, you can compactly compress your clothes, eliminating wasted space.
These are my go-to compression cubes > they have a dual-zipper system that makes minimalistic packing a breeze!
19. Choose the Right Luggage
I’ve recently discovered the GOT bag which has become my personal preference.
I use the 26-liter GOT Bag Rolltop Lite backpack which is designed with minimalists in mind.
What sets the GOT bag apart is its commitment to sustainability.
It’s made from 60% ocean-impact plastic, which is recovered and recycled from the ocean.
Also, the GOT bag is waterproof, so your belongings will stay dry while minimizing environmental impact.
The backpack’s design prioritizes comfort, featuring a padded back for maximum support.
Trust me, comfort is key!
If carrying a backpack is just not an option for you, invest in a bag that rolls.
The Take Off Luggage is an excellent choice for minimalist packing.
With its signature removable wheels, Take Off Luggage can be transformed from a carry-on into a personal item.
Look who’s avoiding baggage fees with this one!
Installing and using the wheels is easy and convenient.
The bag is designed to fit under the seat so you’re always in control of your luggage.
Overall, the Take Off Luggage is a great option for minimalist packers who value convenience, durability, and security.
20. Bring Only One Bag
Carrying just one bag eliminates the hassle of managing multiple bags.
It keeps you focused on enjoying your journey. That’s what’s really important, right?
It also reduces the time spent checking in and retrieving any baggage from baggage claim (that might even be lost).
Whenever I arrive at the airport, I bypass long lines for check-in and head straight to security with my one bag.
I’m also avoiding baggage fees by using this minimalistic method.
It’s a practical and cost-effective approach that adds convenience and efficiency to your travel.
When you have limited space in a single bag, you are forced to be selective and intentional about what you pack.
This mindset helps you prioritize essential items.
While it may take some practice to determine what you really need, I know you have it in you!
21. Cosy Collection Neck and Bag Pillow
If packing only one bag is a huge challenge for you, the Cosy Collection Neck and Bag Pillow (NAB Pillow) is the real deal when it comes to reaching your minimalist packing goal.
It’s a neck pillow that can be filled with clothes. And maybe my favorite thing ever.
By filling the pillow with soft clothing items like socks, t-shirts, or swimsuits, you not only create a comfortable pillow for your neck during travel but also maximize space in your main bag.
For 10% off your Cosy Collection NAB pillow, use code CHEWSTOEXPLORE at checkout!
22. Weigh Your Bag Before You Leave
Many airlines impose weight restrictions on checked and carry-on bags.
By weighing your bag before leaving home, you’ll know ahead of time if you’ll be running into any trouble.
This proactive step helps you avoid any unexpected overweight baggage fees, which can be costly and add unnecessary expenses to your travel budget.
By packing like a minimalist and keeping your bag within the allowed weight range, you can save money and allocate those funds towards more meaningful experiences during your trip.

23. Bring the Collapsible Version
Bringing collapsible versions of essential items, such as a collapsible water bottle is a smart step towards minimalism.
These innovative products are designed to be compact and take up minimal space in your luggage.
When empty, these bottles can be compressed or folded down to a fraction of their original size, allowing you to easily stow them away when not in use.
24. Pack Small Headphones
Whether you prefer Airpods or earphones with strings (that’s me, I’m a little old school), selecting small headphones is a practical solution for minimalist travelers.
25. DIY Colorstreet Nail Strips
If you’re a DIY girlie and like doing your own nails, be sure to pack Colorstreet nail strips!
They are significantly less bulky than nail polish bottles. And really easy to use.
You can apply them quickly and effortlessly, without worrying about smudging or waiting for them to dry.
This makes them a perfect choice for on-the-go nail care, whether you’re on a plane or simply in a hurry to get ready for your next adventure.
If you have difficulty sleeping during long flights, you can even take advantage of this time to pamper yourself and apply the Colorstreet Nail Strips.
These ColorStreet Nail Strips are a necessity for minimalist travelers who enjoy DIY nail care!
26. Minimize What’s in Your Wallet
Let’s take a look at what’s in your wallet. That BJ’s card? You likely won’t be needing that.
If you’re traveling internationally, there’s no need to carry local store loyalty cards or memberships that are specific to your home country.
Instead, focus on bringing essential cards, such as a credit card with no foreign transaction fees, which can help you save money on international purchases.
One of our favorite cards with no foreign transaction fees is the Chase Sapphire Preferred.
Alongside your cards, it’s advisable to carry a reasonable amount of cash for convenience, as not all places may accept cards or have reliable card payment systems.
Determine the appropriate amount of cash based on your destination and the availability of ATMs or currency exchange services.
27. Pack in Advance
If you pack in advance, you can avoid the pitfalls of overpacking.
When you leave packing to the last minute, the rush and stress of trying to gather everything quickly often result in packing more than necessary.
I’ve been there, and it wasn’t very minimalistic of me.
By giving yourself ample time to pack in advance, you can approach the process with a calm and organized mindset.
This allows you to carefully consider each item and make thoughtful decisions about what you truly need for your trip.
You can take the time to create a packing list, assess the activities and weather at your destination, and choose versatile items that can be mixed and matched.

It also simplifies the entire packing and unpacking process.
Imagine stepping off the plane and seamlessly diving into your itinerary. With minimal baggage, there’s nothing holding you back from embracing the freedom to explore right from the get-go.
Packing light is like the ultimate budget travel companion.
This minimalist approach isn’t just about streamlining your journey; it’s a strategic move that helps you steer clear of those dreaded baggage fees – the oversized baggage fees and the overweight baggage fees.

Save Money on Flights
Let’s talk about everyone’s favorite topic: saving money!
We all know how much of a downer baggage fees can be.
When you travel with minimal luggage that fits within the limits of carry-on allowances, you can skip those hefty charges that airlines place on checked bags.
By avoiding the need to check in your luggage, you effectively eliminate the risk of being charged additional fees, which can add up quickly, especially if you’re a frequent traveler.
With each trip, the savings can be substantial and put to better use – whether it’s treating yourself to a memorable experience at your destination or simply having more financial flexibility during your travels.
It’s a win-win situation that allows you to allocate your hard-earned money toward experiences and adventures rather than paying unnecessary baggage fees.
Easier to Pack and Unpack
The benefits of minimalist packing go beyond the cost savings.
When you opt for a minimalist approach, you’ll quickly discover how much easier it becomes to prepare for your trip and settle into your accommodations.
Think about it: with fewer items to consider, you’ll (hopefully) spend less time figuring out what to pack and more time focusing on the excitement of your upcoming adventure.
You’ll no longer face the overwhelming task of sorting through piles of clothing and accessories, trying to decide what’s essential and what’s not.
Instead, you’ll streamline the process by including only the absolute necessities.
You can do it, I have faith!
Packing like a minimalist saves you time and ensures that your belongings remain organized and easily accessible throughout your journey.

Always in Control of Your Luggage
When it comes to traveling, maintaining control over your luggage is essential for a smooth and stress-free journey.
This is where packing light becomes your secret weapon, granting you the ultimate control over your belongings.
By packing light, you can rely on carrying your luggage with you at all times, avoiding the need to check it in or entrust it to others.
This ensures that you always know exactly where your belongings are and minimizes the risk of items getting lost or mishandled during transit.
Increased Mobility
Traveling light means you’ll no longer be weighed down by heavy bags that slow you down or tire you out.
Unexpected opportunities may arise during your trip, enticing you to explore new destinations, take spontaneous detours, or extend your stay.
By packing light, you grant yourself the flexibility to adjust your plans as needed.
Last year, we were planning to fly to Vietnam.
However, upon arrival at the airport, we encountered unexpected visa issues that prevented us from boarding our flight.
At that moment, we had a choice: to be disappointed and let the setback ruin our travel plans or to embrace the spirit of adventure and adapt to the situation.
Thanks to our minimalist packing approach, we swiftly shifted gears and decided to fly to Malaysia instead.
This sudden change of plans and the seamless transition to a new destination wouldn’t have been possible if we had been burdened by excess luggage.
With minimal baggage, you have the freedom to seize these moments without being tied down by excessive belongings.
Another advantage of packing light is the avoidance of backaches and physical discomfort.
Carrying heavy bags for prolonged periods can take a toll on your body.
